Now that summer is in full swing my BBQ craving has gone crazy! One of my favorite handheld delights is your average American Hot Dog. Now, being Vegan, the typical “Vegan Dogs” do not quite hit the spot for me. Therefore, I created my version 🙂 A Samwichlife Original that I believe every budget conscious family should try! This meal is as simple as it is cheap. Grab the following ingredients and prepare to be amazed 🙂 Prep time is typically 45 minutes.
-3 Tbsp. EVOO & Cast Iron Pan
-1 Block Trader Joes Extra Firm Tofu ($1.80)
-2 Tbsp. Trader Joes Soyaki Sauce ($2.50)
-1 Tbsp. Toasted Sesame Seeds $1.50)
-1 Pack of Hot Dog Buns ($2.00)
-½ c. Sweet Onion cut into strips ($1.00)
-Whichever toppings you use for Hot Dogs (Ketchup, Mustard, Relish, Spinach, Carrots, try a variety of things! Get creative!)
First you will start by draining your block of Tofu for 15-20 minutes on a paper towel. Once drained, cut into cubes and place in your cast iron with the 3 Tbsp. EVOO. Make sure there is enough oil, your Tofu will rip if you do not coat the bottom of the pan well enough 🙂 From here, fry your Tofu until is golden brown! This typically takes 10-15 minutes of stirring occasionally.
Add in your 2 Tbsp. Soyaki and 1 Tbsp. Sesame Seeds, stir and then fry for another 5 minutes, this will put a small char on the Tofu and give it a “crunchy” feel.
Next remove Tofu from pan and place on a plate to cool for 10-15 minutes. Re use your same pan (no need to clean it out) and throw your onions in with a bit more EVOO. Place a lid on top and let this steam for 5 minutes. Stir once and allow to sit until your desired color.
Finally assemble your dogs! Place Tofu in the warmed bun, top with onions and enjoy! This cheap meal will run you about $9.00! This has zero cholesterol, low in fat, high in protein and will make your stomach feel full from one serving (one hotdog)! Now doesn’t that sound like a great addition to your busy work week?
