A Toast to Grey Ghost Detroit

With an eclectic playlist and soft lighting, Grey Ghost Detroit can look like your typical chic bar. However, many are not aware of the true treasure hidden behind it’s doors. This establishment was named after the famed rum running pirate “Grey Ghost” of the Detroit River during the prohibition era. But don’t be fooled into thinking that the drinks are anything short of perfection. Cocktails are artfully crafted and created in house by their passionate bar staff. The array of flavors encompassed by their exclusive glassware, can only be described as a divine journey through the genius of Will Lee and Rudy Leon. Not only are you delightfully and appreciatively greeted by the bar tenders, but you are well taken care of during your stay by each member of the Grey Ghost team. Whether you are dining at the bar, or at their tables, the service provided will give you the infallible welcome that is only received when amongst true friends. If the customer service and drinks do not immediately draw you in, their cuisine will pull you overboard. Chef Joe Giacomino and Chef John Vermiglio have catered a menu that will push your comfort level and reward you with new found favorites. Their kitchen bends the rules when it comes to high-end restaurant etiquette. Food allergies? Vegetarian? Vegan? These are all challenges that these chefs thrive on. John Vermiglio curated three beautifully made dishes to suit my vegan lifestyle in the blink of an eye. Each one more memorable than the last.

Short cuts? Not here, presentation and taste is held to the highest standard. An Asparagus Antipasto Salad, sitting atop Whipped White Bean with Pepperoncini, Kalamata Olives and Crispy Garbanzos gloriously draped across.

This is how The Ghost does Toast. Every brunch lover should rejoice in this delightful combination of Sweet Pea Guacamole, Sourdough Bread, Jalapeño Jam, Pickled Veggies and Dill.

A slight spin on their appetizer of Potato Samosas, John used Vegan Pastry crust to create a Mexican favorite, Jerk Potato Empanadas. These empanadas are perched on a homemade Coconut Chimichurri Crema that will blow the mind. Mango-Lentil Chutney and Green Onion/Parsley adorn the top.

Not only will they take the time to assess what your needs are, but they will skillfully present it to you with a smile. Victoria Nichols of Grosse Pointe Woods has ranted and raved about the ghost crew saying “my nephew has many food restrictions/allergies, and he can never eat at a public restaurant. When he comes to visit, I let John know ahead of time that we will be coming for dinner. John comes over and asks my nephew what he would personally like to eat, then considers each food allergy and develops a tailored and decadent dish. It is the only restaurant that my nephew feels comfortable dining at”.

It is no surprise that Grey Ghost has found a happy home in Detroit. Along with their amazing provisions, they are actively working side by side with charitable efforts to make Detroit a stronger city. They recently raised enough money to provide Detroit Prep Elementary School with a new kitchen and cafeteria. The Grey Ghost Kitchen & Cafeteria is one of the many accolades this restaurant keeps pursuing. They feel that it is a duty to support the community around them, and make Detroit better for all, not just for the privileged.

If the fare, service and charitable efforts have not enticed you to give the Ghost a try, I don’t know what will. So come on down, and enjoy the treasure that is Grey Ghost Detroit.
